Adding extra sockets
When you have too many appliances plugged into one extension or sharing an extension block then it is time to add extra points or sockets.
First things first-TURN OFF THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY AT THE MAINS
Plan your layout.
If you are going to surface mount the extra socket then you will require trunkin and some 2.5m wire which is the recommended wire for sockets,a surface mount plastic body and the switch faceplate.
Run the wire from the existing socket and connect your wires like for like i.e.
Red/Brown(positive) Black/Blue(negative)green&yellow(earth)
Lay your trunking against the skirting or wall and cut to the required position.Lay your wire inside the trunking to the point where you want the extra socket.Fix the new socket securely to the wall and feed the cable into the box .Connect up the wires in the right sequence and secure .Switch on power and test.
Test for hidden pipes
Before drilling into any surface it is wise to invest in a wire and stud detector. Most of the time you cannot see what is behind walls and tiles and without having to drill through pipes and flooding the house in the process,or drilling through electrical cables and risking an electrical shock in the process.
These detectors are relatively cheap and can now be bought anywhere.watch the video and stay safe
Fused spur
Fused spurs or FCU’s are electrical connections that run of a radial circuit and these are sockets which connect appliances that are permanently wired and have an independent fuse for the unit. Useful for appliances that need to stay on permanently
Ie; fridge,shower pump,cooker hood,dishwasher etc.
To fit this you will need to be competent and check the wiring regulations first
