Loft Insulation
Most of the heat in homes is lost through the loft that is why it is vital to insulate your loft as a major part of reducing fuel bills and reducing the amount of energy lost through the roof space.
There are different types of insulation but before you embark on any type of loft insulation you will need to adhere to vital safety issues because the material used for loft insulation is hazardous to your breathing as well as an irritant to different types of skin conditions.
SAFETY FIRST!!!
1. Wear safety glasses, mask and long sleeves.
2. If your loft is not boarded up then lay floorboards or scaffold boards on the joists to give you somewhere to stand otherwise you risk coming through the loft.
3. Mind your head on the rafters and always beware that you are working in a restricted space.
TYPES OF INSULATION:
1. Blanket insulation:
This comes in the form of a roll and lays flat between the joists.
Start at the far end of the eaves and roll out the blanket, cut as necessary.
2. Pellets:
These are like bird seeds or foam pellets.Just spread these in between the joist space and level
3. Foil sheets or thermal insulation-like a roll of foil which is stapled to the rafters, this method requires a space between the rafters and the foil sheet to allow the roofing felt and tiles breathe.
4. Foam sheets-cut to size and placed in between the rafters.
Loft insulation is relatively easy to install but here are a few don'ts.
