STOP A DRIPPING OVERFLOW
When water flows into the toilet cistern there is a float valve that rises as the water level rises, the mechanism automatically shuts off the water supply when the water flow reaches a preset level, when this fails to happen then the water will continue to flow into the cistern and eventually pour out through the overflow to the outside of the house. This can be both a waste of water and a huge annoyance
INSULATING A HOT WATER CYLINDER
Leaving the water tank un insulated actually wastes a lot of energy. The idea of insulating a tank is to retain heat in the tank for when you need it.
It is quite simple to do in that all you need is the jacket which can be bought from most hardware and DIY stores strap the jacket round the cylinder with string or clips.
To maximise the efficiency of the insulated tank you should also consider lagging the pipes.
LAGGING THE PIPES
When water freezes it expands and the end result is that when it warms up it can rapture the pipes, especially in the coldest part of the house which is the loft.
Lagging is basically a foam tubular like wrapper that goes over the pipes like a jacket then held with cable ties or tape
STOP A DRIPPING TAP
Firstly -turn off the water,it is not always easy to locate the stopcock for the main water supply, but the first place it would be is under the kitchen sink.
For hot water supply-turn off the boiler or immersion heater.
Remove or undo the screw on the top or side of the tap head.
1. Unscrew head of tap using spanners
2. Remove the tap housing from the main tap body.
3. Prise off the rubber washer at the bottom of the tap housing
4. Replace washer and fit tap together
