10 electrical tips
1. Always turn off all the electricity in the house before working on any electrical appliance or lighting.
If you absolutely have to isolate just the lights because you are working on the lights and someone is using the
computer then remember this golden rule:
In your fuse box it should be labelled ,but if not it is advisable to label all the fuses so that everyone in the
house is absolutely clear about the functions of the fuse box.
5 AMP or 6 AMP-is for your lighting-it is the lowest rating of the fuses
15 AMP-is for your plug sockets-it is the second highest rating of the fuses
30 AMP-is for your cooker socket-it is the third highest rating of the fuses
30 AMP-is for your immersion heater if you have one
30-40 AMP-is for your electric shower-it is the highest rating of the fuses
2. Always make sure all your electrical pipes are bonded, this reduces the risk of a fatal electrical shock
especially in a dangerous place like the bathroom, this is a silver "bonding" clamp which is attached to all pipes
by linking them using a yellow and green earth wire to join all the pipes. Make sure that if you cut a copper pipe
and use a plastic push fit pipe then you need to attach a "bonding" clip and wire above and below the push fit
plastic to continue the path to earth, by cutting a copper pipe and inserting a plastic pipe in between the two
sections of copper pipe you have "broken the path to earth"
3. Always use a RCD short for (RESIDUAL CURRENT DEVICE) when working outside-if you were to cut through the cable
of a lawnmower or a trimmer for instance, the RCD would immediately cut off the power supply before is reaches
your body and has the chance to give you an electric shock
4. Use a fused spur to connect all fixed appliances like :cooker hoods, extractor fans, shower pumps etc.
5. Never overload an extension socket-always read the maximum wattage or output of the extension socket; If you can
plug in items up to 1,000 watts for instance-do not attempt to overload it with 1,200 and so on the maximum is
there for a reason-overload it and you risk melting the sockets, destroying the appliances plugged into it and also
the possibility of a fire risk.
6. Never attempt any electrical work that is beyond your capabilities-The building regulations of England and
Wales: Part P refers to what you can do without informing building control so read this information of get a copy
from here:www.handymantips.co.uk/building regulations.html
7. If you notice any smell of burning wires or black marks around the sockets then switch off the main fuse box and
call an electrician .
8. When fitting heavy light fittings like a fan or chandelier make sure that they are firmly screwed in to a joist,
this is a solid wooden baton into which your ceiling plasterboard in screwed onto-If you cannot locate a joist then
for get this type of fitting.
9. When the socket fuse blows in the main fuse box and even after switching everything back on it still blows the
you need to isolate the problem by switching everything that is plugged in off, switching the fuse box back on then
switching all the plugged in items on one by one -the one that blows or trips the fuse box is the problem
appliance, remove and replace the appliance.
10.If you can afford it -change your old fuse box if it still uses the wire and replace it with a modern one that
has a button to reset the fuse box in case of it tripping
